Six of the migrants were put on an airplane bound for Algeria on Oct. 29, while the remaining six were sent back to Morocco in the past few days, the company said.
Sailing under the Lithuanian flag, the Kaunas Seaways is currently sailing between Turkish and Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea after being rented out to a Ukrainian company, Ukrferry.
The migrants who made their way to the ferry in trailers with commodities from Turkey stayed aboard the vessel from July 27. They were placed in cabins and guarded by the security. According to the press release, this was done for the safety of the migrants, passengers and the crew.
The migrants who spent a few months aboard the vessel did not have identity documents, therefore, were issued temporary travel papers.
The company’s representative said the story could cost the ferry company and the institutions that handled the issues up to 0.5 million euros.
