International conference in Stockholm discusses transport opportunities for Scandinavia and Baltics

In the opening speech Lithuanian Ambassador Eitvydas Bajarūnas stressed the need to use all of the possibilities and advantages to develop transport business in the Baltic region.

According to the ambassador, good transport and communication systems extend the business opportunities, maintain close cultural and social connections, increase the mobility of people, expand international collaboration and tourism, improve business environment and encourage the diversification.

According to the ambassador, Nordic and Baltic regions over the past decades have achieved amazing results by connecting West region and East coasts. “Sweden is connected with Lithuania and the other Baltic countries by political and human ties. In the end of this year Lithuanian and Swedish electricity line NordBalt will be launched. In order to ensure balanced development it is needed to be more decisive in connecting the region with closer transport links”, told the Ambassador.

The conference was attended by the Lithuanian deputy minister of transport Arijandas Šliupas, Albertas Šimėnas, deputy director of “Lithuanian railways“, Artūras Drungilas, deputy director of port of Klaipėda, leaders of the Swedish railways “Green Cargo”, representatives of Malmö, Södertälje and Karlshamn ports, Swedish Lithuanian, Turkish and other countries carriers and logistic specialists from MSC, Schenker, Gefco, DFDS Seaways, manufacturing representatives of various companies, including Statoil, Volvo and others.

According to deputy minister of transport Šliupas, transport is the best way to connect countries. “Therefore, task of Lithuania, which is in strategically advantageous geographical location, is to connect, with the means of transport, different regions.”. As Šliupas underlined, “with the rapid growth of Asian economies and increasing freight traffic to and from Europe, it is important for Lithuania to introduce its transport and logistics sector here, Sweden, in order to become an important new part of the logistics chain.”

Advantages of the Lithuanian transport infrastructure were presented to the audience. Institutions and companies were offered to use Lithuanian transport and logistic services and take the benefits of the projects like “Viking”, “Sun” and others. Participants noticed high progress made by the port of Klaipėda in the last decade.

During the discussions it was stressed that the conferences like this is a perfect opportunity to share useful information, experiences and new ideas. When trade ties between EU and China, North Europe and Black Sea regions become more intense, we have to use the chance and make sure that the trade routes would go through our region.

Participants of the conference emphasized the importance of using all the benefits that Lithuanian and Swedish logistic and transport sectors have.
