At the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) the Japanese specialists were introduced to Lithuania’s food and veterinary control system. They observed how laboratory testing was being carried out at the National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute.
“Negotiations on export to Japan were launched a couple of years ago. We submitted the application and questionnaire over meat and meat product export in 2013. In 2014 Japan included the National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute in the list of approved foreign analytical institutions. Testing results it provides are recognised in Japan. Standards for food products are very high in Japan, therefore negotiations will continue after ascertaining that food and veterinary control as well as meat standards correspond to requirements in Japan. In addition, animal health requirements must adhere to Japanese standards. The visit is very important seeking that the promising Japanese market is accessible for our beef producers,” said Director of VMVT Jonas Milius.
The Japanese delegation is scheduled to visit a slaughterhouse, a meat processing company, several livestock farms and Medininkai border inspection post.
