Justmin-designate scrutinized over drunk driving penalty

President Dalia Grybauskaitė‘s spokeswoman to ld BNS that the president “was aware of the fact of the candidate’s loss of driver’s license.”

“In consultations with the prime minister-designate on the candidate, the information was not the main factor. The newly-published details came as an unpleasant surprise, they will have to be considered by the prime minister who proposed the candidate,” the President’s Office said in a comment to BNS.

According to information provided by the police, Pagojus, now 28, was pulled over in late May of 2015 close to the seaside resort of Nida. A subsequent breathalyzer test found 0.67 promille alcohol in his blood.

Prime Minister-Designate Saulius Skvernelis told BNS he knew the fact before proposing the candidate, however, “rather late” and updated the president on the information. In his words, Grybauskaite supported Pagojus’ designation to the post.

Acting Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, the leader of the ruling Social Democrats that nominated Pagojus to the position, said he would suggest that the party assesses Pagojus’ conduct but did not consider recalling him from the Cabinet.
