A special working group, chaired by Justice Minister Elvinas Jankevičius, held its first meeting last week and will draw up a specific eviction plan, the ministry said.
Official do not reveal a specific eviction deadline but say the goal is to do it swiftly. Following the eviction, the prison complex will be handed over the state enterprise Turto Bankas (Property Bank).
Vice Minister of Justice Ernestas Jurkonis says the wish to rebuild trust in the prison system and cut costs is behind the rush to vacate the correctional facility. 697 Lukiškės-based inmates would be sent to other facilities in Alytus, Kaunas, Šiauliai and Kybartai.
