Karbauskis says to withdraw amendment banning embryo freezing

“As to embryo freezing, everything will remain the same as in the adopted law that will take effect on January 1,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

However, Karbauskis underlined that he will stick to all other amendments he has proposed to the Law on Assisted Reproduction.

“These are four amendments that concern aspects other than embryo freezing. It will not be allowed to move embryos out for purposes other than medicinal, the destruction of embryos will be banned and children will have the right to get to know who their biological parents are when they reach the age of majority. Also, using reproductive cells for commercial purposes will not be allowed, which means that egg donation will have to be gratis,” he said.

The lawmaker will also propose that unused embryos should be stored forever.

“If more embryos are created than needed, they will have to be stored. IF families have unused embryos, they will have to be stored forever,” he said.
