Landsbergis apologizes for poor conservatives’ results but plans to stay on

“I personally apologize, if we expected a better result but I’m saying that the next time will definitely be better,” he said.

In Landsbergis’ words, the next election to conservatives’ leadership is scheduled for May of 2017.

“Our party is the only party that has a democratic procedure to elect its chairman, and the election for the party’s leader is scheduled for next May – I will definitely be rated there whether the result in multi-member voting is indeed acceptable and whether the path the party walked over the past two years was correct,” Landsbergis told a news conference on Monday morning.

He emphasized that Ramūnas Karbauskis, the leader of the Peasant and Green Union that won the parliamentary elections, should choose the direction he wants to go – to the left of to the right. Therefore, in Landsbergis’ said, two-way negotiations are unacceptable.

“Negotiations cannot take place at the same time with the Social Democratic Party and the Homeland Union. The other condition is that we, right-wing parties, should come to the negotiations together,” said Landsbergis.

According to data provided by the Central Electoral Commission, the Peasant and Green Union won 56 seats in the 141-member Seimas, while the conservative Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats came in second with 31 seats and the Social Democrats won 17 mandates.

The Liberal Movement secured 14 mandates, the Order and Justice Party won nine, the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Union of Christian Families came in with eight. The Labor Party won two mandates, while the Green Union, the Center Party and the List of Lithuania party received one each. Another mandate was one by Darius Kaminskas of the Labor Party running as an independent candidate.
