Liberal Gustainis wins MP mandate in Vilnius

Gustainis, a business consultant, received 50.9 percent of the vote, while Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, formerly a member of the European Parliament, was supported by 42 percent of voters.

A new MP had to be elected in Žirmūnai to replace Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis of the Social Democratic Party after he was appointed a member of the European Commission.

Gustainis said his victory was due to increased popularity of the Liberals.

“Just like the it is the case across Lithuania, the tendency here is the same – the Liberals were victorious in these local elections, first of all, did well in the mayoral election and I am just very happy that people of Vilnius believed in their proposals, and this is the main reason why I was elected,” he told journalists at the Liberals’ election bureau on Sunday evening.

Up until now, the Liberals had 10 mandates in Lithuania’s 141-seat parliament.
