Liberals: “Farmers” seeking to politicise the LRT at any cost

“The majority’s aims appear quite clear: to ensure that the ad hoc LRT investigation commission’s conclusions would be approved and to this end, all possible measures are employed. What is more, while this important matter was to be included in Tuesday’s agenda, the discussion of the conclusions was moved by the majority to late Thursday evening,” Seimas Liberal Movement group prefect Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen criticised the “Farmer” decision.

The MP highlighted that the “Farmers” are, as the press release puts it, “Committed to reining in the LRT by the elections, are seeking to avoid dialogue with the opposition and disregarding criticism are “bulldozing” through with the ad hoc commission’s conclusions.”

“The Liberals refused to delegate their members to this commission from the very start. In light of the 2006 Constitutional Court ruling, we continue to believe that the attack against the LRT is anti-constitutional,” Eugenijus Gentvilas added.

The Liberals believe that the ad hoc commission’s proposals to change the LRT management model, council member term duration and their appointment procedures is a threat to the freedom of press in the country.
