Liberals want to expel Guoga following controversial statements

“It is a reaction to statements by our acting chairman over the last several days,” the Liberal Movement’s deputy chairman Gintaras Steponavičius has confirmed. “We will discuss the issue at the board meeting tomorrow in an effort to contain the critical situation that the Liberal Movement is in.”

The motion so expel Guoga out of the party has been proposed by the Liberal Movements board member Julija Mackevič.

Last week, investigators said they were investigating bribe-taking and influence peddling suspicions against Liberal leader Eligijus Masiulis. He subsequently stepped down from the party’s leadership, which was temporarily entrusted to Masiulis first deputy, Guoga.

Immediately after the news broke last Thursday, Guoga posted a statement on social media, saying that Masiulis should admit all wrongdoing, if there was any, and that Guoga himself would have never accepted a bribe.

He later raised some eyebrows by announcing plans to sell of his businesses in Lithuania and to build a church. Guoga has also suggested that leaders of all political parties should take a lie detector test.

On Monday, Guoga also said during a radio interview that other members of the Liberal Movement could have been bound by untoward relations with big business.
