“We are honoured to have the famous architect Daniel Libeskind on this project- that is a small one for him, but a very significant one for Vilnius. Libeskind has taken an unusually small and difficult space and transformed the entire landscape with incredible vision,” said Vilnius Mayor Artūras Zuokas.
Ideally located between the historic centre, the business district and the airport, the new centre will connect the two central areas and create a multi-purpose destination for Europe. The Beacon will offer a wide range of winter and summer sports, combined with a program of recreational and cultural entertainment for all ages and interests.
“I was inspired by the landscape of this beautiful city. My goal with this project was to bring an exciting dimension of architecture that respects the natural elements, while providing a year-round sustainable centre for the citizens of Vilnius,” said Libeskind. “The Beacon is set to become a new epicentre of entertainment, leisure and culture for the city”.
Project Overview
Situated at the base of Vilnius’ premier ski hill and the highest point in the city, the Beacon is inspired by the natural beauty of the Lithuanian landscape. The design is a study in contrasting geometries. At the core of the masterplan is a circular plaza that encompasses the open arena/ sports centre, sited along the periphery are the two main structures, and a zig-zagging canopy spirals around the site creating a dramatic architectural experience, as well as creating a protected pathway between the main areas of the centre.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2015 and be completed in 2016.
Libeskind established his architectural studio in Berlin, Germany, in 1989 after winning the competition to build the Jewish Museum in Berlin. In February 2003, Studio Daniel Libeskind moved its headquarters from Berlin to New York City when Daniel Libeskind was selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment.
