Lithuania allocates additional 13 million to national defence

“The current situation that has developed during the pre-crisis period is such that defence spending has been reduced and, following changes in security situation in our Eastern neighbour and international relations in Eastern Europe, a more serious attention to defence is necessary,” says Deputy Minister of National Defence Antanas Valys.

According to the deputy minister, the additional financing will be allocated to restore military capacities and to strengthen the support of a host country.

Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas has said that additional funds will be invested to purchase anti-aircraft missile systems, medium range anti-tank defence system and ammunition, to develop the infrastructure of training grounds, to improve training conditions, to activate investment projects.

The law adopted by the Seimas on 10 July provides for appropriations amounting to LTL 45 million (EUR 13 million) to be allocated this year to national defence from the Privatisation Fund and LTL 85 million (EUR 25 million) to be allocated from the budget.

As reported, Lithuania has committed to gradually augment defence spending which has to reach 2 percent of GDP by 2020.
