Lithuania and Poland slam EU Commission for seeking closer Russia ties

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius and his Polish counterpart Witold Waszczykowski signed a letter, addressed to EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem and EU foreign relations chief Federica Mogherini, saying “we [the EU] have to stop sending optimistic and encouraging signals” to Moscow at a “sensitive” moment in relations.

“Possible deeper economic integration between the EU and the Russian Federation… depends on a set of specific conditions,” they said, adding that “we lack any meaningful progress on fulfilling these conditions”.

The letter from Linkevičius and Waszczykowski is a reaction to EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker‘s suggestions that Brussels should open talks with the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union.

“We are surprised and concerned about the recent signals sent to the Russian Federation, which provide an overly optimistic perspective and send a positive message without references to the conditions,” the letter from Linkevičius and Wasczykowski reads.

They said Russia must first implement the Minsk agreements on ceasefire in Ukraine, withdraw its troops and hand back control of the border to Kiev.
