Lithuania has ‘practically unlimited’ freedom of speech – PM

“I think we have a practically unlimited freedom of speech,” he said on the Žinių Radijas radio station.

However, it is difficult to speak about the freedom of these media organizations whose owners are directly linked to other types of business, the prime minister noted.

According to Skvernelis, the media’s mission is to criticize the authorities, but politicians in Lithuania are almost always given an opportunity to express their position, too.

Lithuania dropped one place to number 36 on the international media watchdog’s latest World Press Freedom Index.

The Paris-based organization said that “the media in Lithuania are reputedly independent and free to criticize the government, but not always the big business interests”.
