Lithuania joins call to investigate crimes of European communist regimes

The statement, signed by justice ministers of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Romania, also criticized countries and governments glorifying the oppressive regimes of Soviet Union and its satellites in Eastern Europe.

The declaration was issued on August 23, the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism. Bratislava, Slovakia, hosted a conference of historians and EU ministers to commemorate the occasion.

The statement also notes that some countries actively encourage extremism and hate crime in Europe by spreading propaganda online and supporting extremist political parties.

The five ministers insist that the European Union has a duty to denounce the crimes perpetrated by communist regimes in Europe.
