Lithuania might have to accept more than 250 refugees, PM says

“We expect the number to rise above 250,” he told journalists.

EU member states plan to distribute 40,000 asylum seekers who are currently in Italy and Greece and 20,000 more refugees from third countries.

EU justice and home affairs minister are set to discuss next week the criteria for the planned distribution.

Lithuania wants refugees to be distributed taking into account a country’s GDP and the population, the prime minister said.

Lithuanian diplomats say the original plans to set refugee quotas for EU member states based on their level of unemployment and prior acceptance of refugees were particularly unfavourable to smaller EU members.

EU member states would receive a one-off payment of EUR 6,000 for every accepted refugee.
