Under the planned marginal numbers of troops for 2018, Lithuania’s professional army should swell from the 9,700 to 10,700 soldiers, including 12 generals and admirals 48 colonels and marine captains, 207 lieutenant colonels and commanders and 673 majors and lieutenant commanders.
Currently, Lithuania’s Armed Forces include about 8,700 professional troops.
The number of professional soldiers is being raised to form two new battalions in western Lithuania and continue completion of other units of Lithuania’s Armed Forces.
To complete the battalions, the ministry intends to raise the number of recruits by 500 next year. This year, the recruitment numbers should be 3,500.
Lithuania’s government has envisaged that the 2018 defence budget would total at 2.07 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
