Lithuania records dramatic spike in emigration last year

About 44,500 people left Lithuania in 2015, equivalent to the population of the country’s seventh-biggest town Marijampolė. Twice fewer people, about 22,100, came to live to the country last year.

In 2014, the figures were 36,600 and 19,900, respectively.

More than half of the emigrants, 55%, were men, every third were young people between 19 and 26, according to Statistics Lithuania.

Most of them emigrated to the United Kingdom (43%), Germany (7.5%), Ireland (6.4%), Norway (6.4%) and Russia (6.3%).

Most of the arrivals last year, 83%, were repatriating Lithuanians. About half of them came from the United Kingdom, most others repatriated from Norway, Ireland and Germany.
