Decreases of the total population are projected for about half of the EU’s member states.
The sharpest decline is expected in Lithuania, at minus 38 percent. If this grim forecast comes true, the country’s population will shrink to 1.8 million within 45 years.
Latvia’s population is forecast to decline to 1.4 million, from 2 million, and Estonia’s population, to 1.1 million, from 1.3 million, according to the report prepared by the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs.
Sharp decreases are also forecast for Bulgaria and Greece, at minus 25 percent and minus 23 percent, respectively.
The strongest population growth is expected in Luxembourg, Belgium, Sweden, Cyprus and the United Kingdom, according to the 400-page document.
The Lithuanian population currently stands at 2.908 million, based on data from the country’s statistics office.
