Lithuania should have 121 MPs – Seimas speaker

“I would think 121 would be a sufficient number,” he told Žinių Radijas news radio on Wednesday morning.

Lithuania’s Cabinet of ministers intends to Wednesday discuss the proposal of cutting the number of MPs from the current 141 to 101 and move the parliamentary election date from October to March.

In Pranckietis’ words, parliamentarians have envisaged alternatives to these proposals, for instance, holding the parliamentary elections a month earlier rather than moving them to spring, so that the new government did not have to work with the state budget approved by its predecessor for the whole year.

“We think that the month would be enough for the new government to adapt the future budget to its program,” said the parliamentary speaker.

He also warned that the number of Seimas members could not be reduced to the level where parliamentary committees did not discuss various issues but simply agreed on them.
