Lithuania takes in 4 Afghans who worked with Lithuanian troops

Abdul Basir Yousuf, who worked as an interpreter for Lithuanian troops in Afghanistan’s Ghor Province, was the first of the men to arrive in Lithuania in April 2016.

Yousuf was resettled to Lithuania after he uploaded a plea on YouTube while being in a refugee camp in Greece. The man was later rejoined by his family.

After Yousuf was granted asylum in Lithuania, he was followed by other Afghans who had worked with Lithuanian soldiers.

Shah Mohammad Shahab came from Ghor and Omer Barak arrived from Kandahar. The two men have been issued with residence permits by the Lithuanian Migration Department.

Osmam Mohammad Jaqub, who came to Lithuania from Ghor in early April, is currently awaiting a decision on his asylum request.

Officials at the Joint Staff say that they confirmed to the Migration Department that all four men had worked with Lithuanian troops in Afghanistan.

“We have a database and can see that they did work for us,” Eugenijus Vaicekauskas, a CIMIC officer at the Joint Staff, said.

Lithuania led the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan’s Ghor Province in 2005 to 2013.
