He attended an informal meeting of EU justice and home affairs ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday when ministers agreed on part of refugee’s movement to EU countries.
“A partial agreement was reached, a partial result regarding the resettlement of refugees from third countries. Now I can definitely say that, under the new formula, we were initially offered to accept 97 people but after consultations Lithuania will resettle 85,” the vice-minister told BNS.
According to Jankevičius, the figure was calculated based on Lithuania’s GDP and population.
These people could be moved to Lithuania over the course of the next two years from refugee camps in Turkey, Jordan or Libya.
It was also agreed on Thursday that EU home affairs ministers would meet on July 20 in Brussels to discuss relocation of 40,000 people from Italy and Greece.
