Lithuania to start exporting meat to US within six months, PM says

The US Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on Wednesday published a notice to the public of a proposed rule as regards the eligibility of Lithuania to export meat and meat products to the United States, the government press services said in a press release.

“After a visit to the US, we expected such a decision to be made and we are happy that all procedures relating to the exports of Lithuanian meat to the US have been finalized. Public consultation will continue until Feb. 17, 2015. Then the authorization for the exports of Lithuanian meat products will formally come into effect hence we believe that meat processing companies will be able to launch exports of beef, pork, lamb and goat meat and their products to the US as early as in the first half of this year. This will mark the opening of another new market to Lithuania,” the press release quoted Butkevičius as saying.

All companies ready to export their products to the US will have to obtain a respective certification from the State Food and Veterinary Service. Their products will be subject to additional checks at the points of entry to the US.

Talks with FSIS on exports were launched back in 2004.
