Lithuanian agriculture minister refers to new European commissioner over detained ship

The vessel was apprehended by Russian authorities in September, purportedly for breaching the boundaries of the Russian economic zone.

In a letter to the newly appointed commissioner, Minister Baltraitienė asked to mediate so that the NEAFC takes responsibility for the situation.

“Other vessels sailing under the flags of the European Union (EU) Member States may also find themselves in a similar situation,” Baltraitienė wrote.

The agriculture minister is planning to meet with the new commissioner on 10-11 November at the Agriculture and Fisheries Council and discuss further actions solving the incident.

As reported, fishing vessel Juros Vilkas sailing under the Lithuanian flag was detained in September. Earlier it was thought that the ship was fishing in the waters administered by the NEAFC. However, it may transpire that the coordinates of the economic zones had changed but the NEAFC, which is subordinate to the European Commission, failed to inform EU Member States about this.
