VSAT said a contract on acquisition of Toyota Land Cruisers had been signed at the service’s central office in Vilnius by VSAT chief and top executive of Mototoja, the local Toyota distributor.
A contract with Sostena on purchase of Renault Trafic was also signed.
Money for the vehicles has been earmarked under two EU projects.
The Toyota Land Cruisers will be used to ensure protection of EU borders and prevent illegal migration and smuggling across the state border. They should be supplied within six months.
The vehicles will feature a lot of additional equipment, including all-wheel drive, sound amplification equipment and other equipment, special lights and telemetric equipment, digital video recorders and meet the standards for border patrol. The vehicles are estimated at 2.8 million euros.
The Renault Trafic minivans are purchased for the same purpose for 846,000 euros.
According to the press release, VSAT last bought a similar number of cross-country vehicles over a decade ago.
