Lithuanian border guards targeted by foreign intelligence six times last year

In one of the cases, a Lithuanian border guard who was visiting a foreign country as part of an official delegation received a flash drive as a gift. VSAT officers later found it contained professional spying software.

VSAT’s Immunity Department head Darius Škarnulis says that foreign intelligence agencies keep approaching Lithuanian border guards to recruit them. As a result, VSAT has instituted new rules regulating the VSAT officers’ trips abroad.

Before going abroad, both on official and personal trips, the officers are briefed on security measures to keep in mind while travelling. The new rules do not apply to trips to NATO and European Union countries, however.

VSAT officers are also required to submit reports about their ties to individuals who are interested in criminal intelligence or classified data.
