Lithuanian conservative party elects Gabrielius Landsbergis as new leader

Landsbergis, a 33-year-old member of the European Parliament, won 55.43 percent of votes in the runoff election versus 44.53 percent of votes for Irena Degutiene, deputy speaker of the Seimas (parliament), according to the first preliminary results published on the party’s website.

The results are yet to be verified by the Central Electoral Commission.

Some 9,060 members of the 15,000-strong party cast their ballots in the election.

Landsbergis confirmed to BNS on Saturday that he will stay in the European Parliament until the party forms its list of candidates for the 2016 general elections. He said that it would be difficult for him to leave his MEP seat right away because of ongoing projects.

Landsbergis, who will top the party’s list for the 2016 elections, told BNS that his key task is to prepare for the polls.

The HU-LCD came in second in the municipal elections last March after the Social Democratic Party. If Lithuania were to hold general elections next Sunday, the conservatives would be supported by 12 percent of likely voters, according to the latest opinion poll released on Saturday.
