Lithuanian court finds ban on Russian-made Ren TV Baltic content unlawful

The ruling was handed down by an extended panel of judges after hearing a plea by UK-registered Baltic Media Alliance Ltd. over the finding of the media watchdog in January of 2015.

The panel then decided to impose a three-month ban on content developed outside the European Union (EU) via Ren TV Baltic.

The administrative court found that the commission committed a procedural violation in the decision.

According to the finding, the media watchdog should have banned the rebroadcasts under the procedure envisaged for EU-registered channels, as Baltic Media Alliance Ltd. is based in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the commission’s decision is in accordance to the rules that apply to rebroadcasts from third countries.

The UK-registered company would not comment on its plans to go to court for compensation of damages.
