Lithuanian energy minister: Vision of Energy Union meets our interests

The discussion was held on the basis of the suggestions submitted on 25 February by the European Commission regarding the Energy Union establishment. The Lithuanian minister emphasised that the fundamental dimensions of the Energy Union establishment include energy security and completion of the domestic market of energy, which coincide with the major goals in the energy field set for Lithuania.

“The European Commission’s vision regarding the Energy Union establishment meets our interests. In the Energy Union, we cannot limit ourselves to the development of physical links only, but we rather must ensure systematic integration of the Baltic States. Even when the power link projects will be completed, we will still be connected with Europe in asynchronous regime, which means we will still be dependent on the external operation, i.e. Russia. The Commission’s suggestions regarding the necessity to ensure synchronisation of the Baltic power system with the continental Europe’s grids will definitely help in achieving this our regional goal of strategic importance,” said Masiulis.

“The crucial role in the implementation of common interest projects is played by strong regional cooperation. Lithuania and other Baltic States are a specific example of successful regional cooperation. Power links of the Baltic States with Poland and Sweden will be completed this year thanks to the cooperation. We expect this regional cooperation to contribute to successful implementation of other important projects successful,” added Masiulis.

The minister of Energy also highlighted the need to strengthen the EU role on the global markets – securing equal competition conditions with third countries is one of the top priorities. With different environmental, climate and social requirements currently in place, energy producers from third countries have competitive advantage over the EU electricity producers.

“We also support the mechanisms which would ensure greater transparency in the field of gas supply. The initiative of the EU to submit proposals regarding the use of liquefied natural gas terminals, especially, in crisis situations, also deserves the credit,” emphasised the minister.
