Lithuanian foreign minister criticises coalition partner’s plan to block refugees

“I would not propose supporting it as I think such an initiative is excessive. I see no point either in terms of timing or contents, and I see no added value. It seems that we have discussed this situation many times and Lithuania made commitments it has no plans to change,” Linkevičius told BNS.

“Emotions are not always a good guide, especially before elections,” the minister warned.

“Following the talks with Turkey, we can see real changes. Despite many problems with the current situation such a statement at this time would not be helpful, and could even be harmful. I am really sceptical about it,” Linkevičius said.

The minister added that the proposed bill includes too many criticisms of EU Institutions, and said that nobody needed such disagreement at time.

Last week, the Labour Party, part of the ruling coalition called on all political parties to sign a joint agreement on Lithuania’s position not to accept any more refugees than had already been agreed. The proposal would confirm the country’s commitment to accept 1,105 refugees.

Under the proposal, the agreement would stay in force until the end of the 2020.
