Conditions for receiving social, healthcare, education, employment and other services would be created in Lithuania for refugees granted asylum in Lithuania, the Cabinet said in a statement.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė had said the country would be able to receive up to 250 refugees even when the government was considering accepting only 50.
The president congratulated the government on its Wednesday decision and reiterated that the endorsed number was the result of an analysis taking into account the size of Lithuania’s population and the country’s GDP.
According Grybauskaitė, the final decision on the relocations of refugees will be made by the European Council in late June.
The European Commission has asked member states to accept 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next two years and also examine a share of 40,000 asylum applications from Syrian and Eritrean citizens currently handled by Italy and Greece.
Brussels wants Lithuania to accept 270 refugees and examine 503 asylum applications.
