Lithuanian government returns its mandate to re-elected president

The president signed a decree, appointing the government to act as temporary caretaker.

It is already clear that the new government will lose three ministers – Health Minister Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis, who is to become a member of the European Commission, Environment Minister Valentinas Mazuronis, who has been elected to the European Parliament, and Agriculture Minister Vigilijus Jukna, who resigned earlier this week.

Furthermore, under an agreement of the political council of the ruling coalition, all vice-ministers resigned by Friday, with the exception of Energy Vice-Minister Renata Cytacka. She and seven other vice-ministers probably won’t be invited to rejoin the government, while all others should be invited back.

Under the Constitution, the government is to return its mandate to a newly-elected president who should present a nomination for prime minister to parliament within 15 days to the parliament.
