Lithuanian government to discuss Greek bailout on Thursday

According to information on the government’s website, the Cabinet will discuss financial assistance to Greece under the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) and a mandate to the European Commission to negotiate with Athens together with the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

The Cabinet will decide on financial support to Greece after the Lithuanian parliament’s Committee on European Affairs states its opinion on this issue on Wednesday.

Thursday’s meeting has been called by Transport and Communications Minister Rimantas Sinkevičius, who is standing in for Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius while he is on vacation. Neither of them could be reached by BNS for comment.

Finance Minister Rimantas Šadžius could not be reached either. The minister has said that the government’s position is that Lithuania, as a eurozone member state, has to show solidarity, but assistance to Greece is conditional on it ensuring the implementation of reforms.

Greece’s parliament is to pass the agreed austerity measures on Wednesday. Further negotiations with Athens on financial support under the ESM will have to be approved by the governments or parliaments of 18 other eurozone countries.
