Lithuanian government to discuss help for collapsing state shipping company

The Cabinet would discuss ways for the crews of the company’s ships stuck in foreign ports to return to Lithuania, Prime Minister said, adding that, if necessary, the government would provide financing for the purpose.

“One of the main goals is to make sure that the seamen return to Lithuania as soon as possible as well as to ensure the required supply of fuel, food and water to ships,” Algirdas Butkevičius told BNS.

According to the prime minister, who cut his summer vacation short, the ministers would also discuss financial guarantees for LJL.

“In line with existing legislation, it’s not possible to earmark any money from the government’s reserve. However, we’ve discussed other financial schemes and, if necessary, will make the decisions tomorrow – to earmark money so as to ensure the safety of our seamen, proper living conditions and possibilities to return to Lithuania,” Butkevičius said.

He could not specify the amount of money that might be required for the seamen to return to Lithuania.
