During the awards ceremony at the Office of the Government of Lithuania on Friday, six people and organizations were awarded after they were selected out of 30 nominees by a special panel of representatives from the Jewish Community of Lithuania as well as cultural, media and public organizations and the academic community.
In his congratulation speech, Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has said he is proud of the new generation in Lithuania who appreciate the universal values of tolerance, honesty, responsibility, justice, respect and impartiality.
“I would like to underline that there is no place in Lithuania for hatred and anti-Semitism. Tolerance, but not indifference, is the key characteristic of a mature society. I do believe that tolerant people live in Lithuania and today’s list of nominees reflects that. (…) I am once again telling all nominees and people radiating tolerance – I am very proud of you,” Butkevičius said.
