Lithuanian justice minister hails improvements in rights awareness among consumers and businesses

“The trend is very clear and I believe it’s the outcome of systemic work by consumer rights institutions and non-governmental organizations as well as the introduction of European standards for the protection of consumer rights,” Juozas Bernatonis said at a news conference on Tuesday.

According to a survey carried out by market researcher Vilmorus in mid-December, 41 percent of the polled (up by 10 percentage points from 2013) said to have sufficient information about the protection of consumer rights.

More than eight of ten respondents, or 85 percent, said that they would first of all contact the seller if they had a complaint about a product or a service, and 60 percent knew whom to contact next if the seller was trying to evade the responsibility.

More than a half, or 55 percent, of businesses believed that they were sufficiently aware about the protection of consumer rights. However, 60 percent of them had not signed the Code of Fair Business Practices and 25 percent had not heard about this code.

Vilmorus polled approximately 1,000 Lithuania’s residents and around 500 businessmen.
