Lithuanian leaders congratulate Latvia on Independence Day

“National flags will be flown not only in Latvia, but also across Lithuania to celebrate this joyful day of freedom and independence. It will reassert the brotherly bond between the Baltic nations as well as their determination to work together towards enhancing the democratic foundations of our statehood and ensuring the welfare and security of our people,” the president wrote in her message of congratulations.

According to the president, bilateral relations between Lithuania and Latvia, based on common historical memory, strong neighbourly ties and mutual respect, promote the pursuit of shared objectives in economic, energy and security spheres.

“I firmly believe that cooperation between our countries in the Baltic Sea region, the European Union and NATO will contribute in a major way to making our states stronger and finding a common solution to the challenges faced by our region,” the Lithuanian head of state wrote in her congratulatory letter.

President Grybauskaitė wished Latvian President Andris Berzins and the people of his country a beautiful celebration.

Meanwhile Seimas Speaker Loreta Graužinienė has congratulated Speaker of the Latvian Saeima Inara Murniece.

“I sincerely congratulate you and the people of Latvia on Independence Day. The establishment of statehood on 18 November 1918 was a foundation to create a modern Latvia,” the parliament speaker said in a message of congratulations.

Graužinienė wished success and productive work to the Saeima and its speaker, and well-being to the people of Latvia.

Parliament Speaker Graužinienė also expressed a hope to meet with the newly elected Speaker of the Latvian Parliament Murniece soon and to further discuss co-operation between the two parliaments and countries.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius congratulated his Latvian counterpart Laimduota Straujuma, expressing hope that bilateral cooperation would continue to grow.

“I am convinced that the Lithuanian and Latvian cooperation will continue to grow in the very best way, and our mutual support and understanding will ensure a secure and prosperous neighbourhood,” Butkevičius wrote in his letter.
