Lithuanian LGBT activists think obsolete 10-litas bill could make for suggestive souvenirs

The 10-litas bill, which has become obsolete following Lithuania’s switchover to the euro, features two men in uniforms, and might be seen as suggestive of the iconography of homoerotic desire.

The two men on the 10-litas bill are Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas, early-twentieth-century pilots who flew over the Atlantic in 1933 in a self-made aircraft.

“As an organization, we will have to consider purchase of a certain amount of the bills and have them as gifts, as they make a very nice symbolic gift and should remind of the times when Lithuania was moving towards the euro and towards European values,” LGL leader Vladimir Simonko told LNK TV news programme on Thursday.

In his words, the Lithuanian 10-litas bills were extremely popular as souvenirs in the past, as they may seem to picture “good friends sharing more than friendship but something more”.

Lithuania adopted the euro on 1 January 2015.
