Lithuanian MEP Guoga mulls political retirement

“Today, I think there’s a very real scenario that I will end my political career after the end of this term,” Guoga told journalists at the Lithuanian parliament.

He, nevertheless, sees “other scenarios”, including new elections.

Guoga attended a convention of the ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union several weeks ago, and he met with Speaker of the Seimas Viktoras Pranckietis on Tuesday.

The politician says he has not received any proposals to stand for election next year and has no plans to join LVŽS.

“I don’t think all politicians need to stay in politics their whole life, stuck in that place,” he said, adding that his ambition to stay in politics is “very low”.

“I believe my term was successful, and it seems people appreciate it,” he said.

Pranckietis told journalists he discussed Lithuanian and foreign political affairs with Guoga.

Guoga was elected to the European Parliament in 2014 as a candidate on the Liberal Movement list but he left the party in 2016. He briefly led the party when its previous leader Eligijus Masiulis got caught in a political corruption case.
