Lithuanian milk producers protesting in Brussels

Jonas Vilionis, the head of the Lithuanian Milk Producers Association, has told BNS that the European Commission had purchased large amounts of powdered milk during intervention purchases and was now pushing them on the market, pulling down prices for the milk and other products. In his words, there are fears that the prices will drop even further when the entire amount is sold.

Vilionis said 16 milk producers would hold their protest during the Monday’s meeting of the European Union (EU) Agriculture and Fisheries Council to tell the EU body that powdered milk sales could have a drastic effect upon the dairy market that recently survived a crisis.

Lithuania’s Agriculture Minister Bronius Markauskas who is scheduled to attend the meeting says that the EC was selling the powdered milk in small quantities and with great caution, therefore, the effect on dairy prices was insignificant.
