Lithuanian MP proposes to tie minimum wages to average salary

“The amendments will allow to guarantee a stable rise of the minimum monthly salary. The safeguards will help ensure that the pay rises together with the economy. If the amendments are passed, the minimum monthly salary would be LTL 1,150 (EUR 333),” noted the chairman of the Order and Justice Party.

The minimum monthly salary increased as of 1 October from LTL 1,000 to LTL 1,035 (from EUR 290 to EUR 300).

Based on preliminary calculations, after the increase of the minimum monthly salary, in October-December 2014 the state and municipal budgets will require approximately LTL 5 million (EUR 1.4 million) additional funds (including social insurance fees). Meanwhile, in 2015, more than LTL 20.4 million (EUR 5.9 million) will be required.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has said that the minimum monthly salary may be increased next year after the municipal and mayoral elections.
