The law, which will affect people who are entitled to citizenships of several states by birth, was endorsed after the first reading by a vote of 71 in favour and one abstention, with no opposing votes. In order for the law to be passed, the Lithuanian parliament will have to vote on it once more.
Under existing legislation, Lithuanian nationals who are also citizens of another country by birth, may keep dual citizenship until they are 21, after which they must choose one. The new law would abolish the requirement to do so.
The Lithuanian Constitution states that, save for exceptions provided for by the law, Lithuanian citizens cannot be citizens of another country. The current Law on Citizenship lists nine cases when dual citizenship is permitted.
