Lithuanian parliament’s website brought down by cyber attack again

“Another (cyber) attack is happening. You can’t access (the website),” Seimas Speaker Loreta Graužinienė told members of the Seimas during a plenary session on Tuesday.

The cyber attack on the Seimas website began at 5 PM last Saturday. The National Cyber Security Centre said on Sunday that it had the situation under control and had put security measures in place to ensure that the website was functioning properly. However, foreign users had problems accessing the website on Monday.

Rimtautas Černiauskas, head of the National Cyber Security Centre, confirmed that the website had been subjected to a so-called DDOS attack carried out from at least 10,000 computers in all continents.

The Seimas office on Monday asked the police to open a pre-trial investigation regarding the attack. Graužinienė told reporters that it was the first cyber attack of this scale against the parliament.

The Seimas on Monday hosted a session of the World Congress of Crimean Tartars, which was broadcast live on the parliament’s website. Foreign users were notified about an alternative channel of broadcast of the event.
