Lithuanian parlt speaker wants panel to check Kasčiūnas’ suitability for post

“We are alarmed over a person working at the National Security and Defence Committee is cited as a possibly unreliable person, therefore, we think we should turn to the committee and ask it to discuss whether a replacement MP could step in for some time,” Pranckietis told journalists after meeting with the prime minister on Thursday.

At the same time, he said there were no reasons to revoke Kasčiūnas’ access to classified information.

Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis said that the committee, which was currently conducting a probe into influences of business and interests groups upon politicians and state institutions, should look into the published information about conservatives’ meetings with Raimondas Kurlianskis, former vice-president of the MG Baltic concern.

On Wednesday, Lietuvos Rytas daily said that Irena Degutienė, conservative vice-chairperson of the Lithuanian parliament, had been questioned by the Special Investigation Service about Kasčiūnas who had not yet won the Seimas mandate.

According to the daily, the authorities suspected that Kasčiūnas, in return for support to an association, had been asked by Kurlianskis to persuade Degutienė, a long-standing member of the parliamentary Budget and Finance Committee, to vote in support of an amendment on consumer loans initiated by Liberal MP Šarūnas Gustainis.
