“Vaitiekūnas assumed the position on September 16,” Evelina Butkutė-Lazdauskienė, spokeswoman for the prime minister, told BNS on Friday.
Vaitiekūnas, who has several decades worth of experience in diplomatic posts, worked as adviser to the parliamentary speaker in 1992-1993, advised the then president Algirdas Brazauskas on foreign policy matters in 1993-1998, worked as ambassador to Latvia in 1999-2004 and as ambassador to Belarus in 2005-2006.
Vaitiekūnas, 62, is a signatory of the 1990 Independence Act who worked as foreign minister in 2006-2008 and was the ambassador to Ukraine in 2010-2014.
Earlier this year, he announced plans to end his diplomatic career.
