Forty-five Members of Parliament, including Speaker Loreta Graužinienė, signed a document addressing the committee. The document claims that the criminal case over the Labour Party’s fraudulent bookkeeping might have been politicised and violated basic human rights and freedoms.
“Political statements or resolutions should not be considered in committees. I hope there will be no more such actions,” the prime minister told the journalists on Tuesday.
The prime minister says the social democrats working in the Committee on Human Rights will not support the document.
Leader of the Opposition Andrius Kubilius said the Seimas should make a protocol decision preventing such questions from being considered in committees. Kubilius warned the Seimas Speaker Loreta Graužinienė that she has made a mistake by defending Uspaskich and the Labour Party. Kubilius threatened to consider if Graužinienė is suited to hold the Seimas Speaker’s seat unless the mistake is corrected.
Liberal Dalia Kuodytė said that the Committee on Human Rights has turned into a committee of Uspaskikh’s rights. According to her, for the last couple of months the parliament has done nothing but attempted to reject the notion that the Labour Party’s criminal case was politicised.
