Lithuanian PM expects Seimas to overturn president’s Labour Code veto

“I asked certain lawyers and experts to look at the vetoed Labour Code once again and we did find nine or ten sensitive issues (that need to be addressed) to reduce social sensitivity and we are inclined to put these issues before the Seimas,” Butkevičius said on Žinių Radijas radio station on Thursday morning.

“These issues would most probably be submitted if the veto were overridden and the code could be passed by the end of the term after being a little improved,” he said.

The prime minister and trade unions agreed on Wednesday that the new Labour Code should be adopted and then improved. However, a compromise will have to be found on contentious issues.

In early July, Grybauskaitė refused to sign the new Labour Code into law, saying that the legislation failed to ensure the rights of employees and reinforced “employers’ domination”.

Lawmakers are expected to decide on whether to overturn the presidential veto of the Labour Code on Saturday, the first day of the last session of the current legislative term.
