He expressed hope for a strong and unified government to be formed after early elections in Greece, adding that it should be capable of fulfilling the obligations to creditors.
“The prolonged negotiations with creditors on the Greek debt has had a negative impact on the country’s economy. We are happy that an agreement has finally been reached and the support programme has been approved. Greece has commitments that only a very strong and unified government can fulfil, and I hope that the new elections will give the Greeks an opportunity to form such a government,” Butkevičius said in a comment communicated to BNS by his spokeswoman Evelina Butkutė Lazdauskienė on Friday.
“The prime minister’s resignation over the political situation in Greece shows what populist ideas lead to,” he added.
Before resignation on Thursday, Tsipras came to power in January, pledging to put an end to painful austerity which was demanded of Greece in exchange for the 240 billion euros in financial support.
Greece should hold early elections in September.
