The candidacy was submitted to President Dalia Grybauskaitė on Tuesday, Butkevičius’ spokeswoman confirmed to BNS.
At the same time, the prime minister submitted a decree on dismissing of incumbent Saulius Skvernelis from the post.
Žilinskas is not a member of any party, serving as director of the Interior Ministry’s Public Security Policy Department.
He was proposed for interior minister by the ruling Order and Justice party, which has the right to nominate the interior minister under the coalition agreement.
The party called for Skvernelis’ resignation after he announced plans of running for parliament with the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union.
