“The number of employees in the public sector has decreased 1.2 percent and grew 4.6 percent in the private sector, yet, this growth will not be very big because we have already felt labour force shortages, particularly in the construction sector. I am more liberal about this and have told our ministers that we need to think how to let in people from foreign countries if they want to work here. They should be issued special permits for a certain period of time while they are working in Lithuania. This is a topic for discussions,” the prime minister said on Thursday morning on the radio Žinių Radijas.
Speaking about the demographic situation in Lithuania, the PM said that “it all depends on the economic situation and social policy”.
Eurostat reports that the decrease in the number of residents in Lithuania from 2000 to 2013 was the fastest in the entire European Union. The forecast says that in 2040 Lithuania will have a population of under 2 million.
